DESCRIPTION:Date: November 11\, 2023\nTime: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nLocation: Folsom Tavern\, 164 Water St.\, Exeter\, NH \nThis is a living History event set in 1786 where Folsom Tavern will be full of reenactors in costume portraying the different sides of the Paper Money debate in the months after the “paper money riot”. You are welcome to walk through the tavern at your leisure and hear from people with different viewpoints on topics like: the war\, debt and currency\, and who should make laws for the new land. \nThe three sides represented will be: \n1. Exeter Politicians and big wigs.2. Farmers from the surrounding towns.3. Locals\, the Folsoms\, and other non-participants. \nConceptual backdrop to program: After the Revolutionary war and before the US Constitution\, there was a period of time where our government was in flux. Would the young United States be able to pull off freedom and independence? Part of the growing pains of a young New Hampshire was the argument over currency\, debt and who should pay for the war just won.On one side were the army’s officers\, now the state’s politicians and big wigs who were tasked with paying off the state’s debts incurred during the war. On the other side were the army’s soldiers\, now the state’s farmers and rural inhabitants who were trying to pay off their own debts while also paying taxes. \nIn the first decades of the United States\, there was no US currency and the individual states’ currency was hard to come by. Also under consideration are those whose voices did not count in decision making: women\, children\, Indigenous Americans\, Black Americans\, religious minorities\, etc. As disagreements were voiced and brought before the young state government\, the role of violence in the state and country was up for debate. \nThis program is made possible by support from Service Credit Union. \nAbout American Independence Center\nLocated in Exeter\, NH\, the American Independence Center features a rare collection of historic artifacts that shed light on the Revolutionary War. This camp is designed for ages 7 to 11. \nWe Are One MiniCampsDuring the minicamps\, campers ages 7 to 11 will immerse themselves in hands-on 18th century life\, uncovering the stories of the people who helped build our nation and how they can continue to be a part of America’s unfolding story. Each week\, campers will dress in colonial clothing\, participate in games and activities\, create projects and eat a colonial-inspired snack. Enlist for one\, two\, three\, or all four sessions! \nAbout American Independence Center\nLocated in Exeter\, NH\, the American Independence Center features a rare collection of historic artifacts that shed light on the Revolutionary War. Examples of popular items in our exhibits include a dragoon pistol\, brown bess musket\, and 18th century powder horn. Many of our programs offer insight into civic duties\, civic engagement and civic responsibility\, while we also feature a variety of things to do in NH\, such as camps for kids\, festivals\, summer festival\, reenactments\, and homeschool programs. Perfect for a day trip or weekend trips\, we believe in inclusivity and inclusive history and the spirit behind the phrase\, ‘we the people’.

Examples of popular items in our exhibits include a dragoon pistol\, brown bess musket\, and 18th century powder horn. Many of our programs offer insight into civic duties\, civic engagement and civic responsibility\, while we also feature a variety of things to do in NH\, such as camps for kids\, festivals\, summer festival\, reenactments\, and homeschool programs. DESCRIPTION:Masks are required. \nCost: \n\n$8 – Adults\n$6 – Seniors\, Students\, Educators & First Responders\n$4 – Children (ages 6-18)\nFREE for Center Members and Veterans.\n\nLadd-Gilman House Tours (10 am\, 12 pm\, 2 pm & 3 pm): Our trained docents will lead you on an hour-long exploration of important moments in our nation’s history\, as seen through the lens of New Hampshire\, and hear untold stories from voices beyond the battlefield. We will explore not only the events that shaped the foundations of the American nation\, but also the people who contributed to the cause of independence\, some of whom will be very familiar and others who may be new to you. \nFolsom Tavern Tours (11 am & 1 pm): Our trained docents will lead you on a tour that will will examine Folsom Tavern’s unique history\, the place that taverns held in colonial and revolutionary history and the different experiences that people had in taverns. This is an immersive\, sensory-friendly tour and guests are encouraged to sit on the chairs and touch the objects on view. A children’s room\, complete with period clothing and books\, is also featured on the tour. This tour is recommended for all ages. \nAll guided tours are limited to six participants and depart from the Ladd-Gilman House. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Visitors are also welcome to take a self-guided tour of Ladd-Gilman House at any time during our open hours\, Wednesday-Saturday\, 10 am – 4 pm. Self-guided tickets can be purchased at the time of visit. Folsom Tavern is open by guided tour only.Due to guide availability the last Ladd-Gilman guided tour on Friday will begin at noon.  \nOther dates and times are also subject to guide availability.  \nAbout the American Independence CenterThe American Independence Center is a history museum in Exeter\, NH that features a collection of 3\,000 historic artifacts that shed light on the American Revolution. Many of our programs touch on civics and the fight for independence\, while we incorporate  inclusivity and diversity into the experiences we create on-site and in digital formats. We feature a variety of things to do for people of all ages\, including festivals\, an historic tavern\, guided tours and our annual American Independence Festival.
